ETHNOGRAPHIC PHOTOGRAPHY & THE REPRESENTATION OF AUTHENTICITY

PHOTOGRAPHIC WORKS of Wolfgang KRAUS & Friedrich Albert DOERBECK

OPENING & WELCOME with drinks & snacks: Sunday, September 12, 2018, 10am
Introductory words at the opening: Students & Wolfgang Kraus & Igor Eberhard

EXHIBITION: September 12 - October 12, 2018 (10am - 6pm)

LOCATION: NIG, Department of Social- and Cultural Anthropology, 4th floor – Corridor B

The exhibition is dedicated to the photo collections of Friedrich Albert Doerbeck (1871-1957) and Wolfgang Kraus (*1964). At the center of the exhibition stands ethnographic photography and the representation of authenticity, in context of the encounter with ‚other‘ cultures, which both photographers are trying to depict in their respective works. One hundred years lie between the works of the two ethnographers, but both are trying to document human societies genuinely, within their everyday social life and realities. The exhibition presents 30 photographic works of the two ethnographers, dedicated to two different cultural groups. Kraus‘ photos focus on the Kabyle people in the High Atlas/Morocco and Doerbeck‘s on the Nivchen (formerly: Giljaks) of Siberia. Color and b/w-photographs illustrate events and scenes of everyday life. What authenticity means in a photographic context shall be discussed and illustrated by using selected examples in this photo exhibition.

SCHICKSALE VON WIENER VÖLKERKUNDLERINNEN IN DER NS-ZEIT

OPENING: Thursday, September 20, 2018,  1pm - 1:30pm

LOCATION: NIG, Department of Social- and Cultural Anthropology, 4th floor – Corridor A

The anniversary of the occupation of Austria by Nazi Germany in 1938 prompted this reflection on the fate of scholars and affiliates of the department and the dramatic impacts of politics on academia. Biographies, documents and their lasting legacy in the shape of their publications introduce the visitors to Austrian ethnologists and their struggles with the new regime in a time when anthropology was an imminently political issue.
