Evening Program

Fieldwork Slam

There's more to fieldwork than what we publish in scientific papers. Following the concept of poetry slams, VANDA provides a stage and a microphone for everyone who wants to share experiences and stories from their work in the field. Vienna's finest storytellers will slam it out with our conference guests. Gain fame and glory by getting in the spotlight and sharing your funniest or most interesting stories. The audience will decide if you are worthy of the title 'Fieldwork Slammer of the Year'.

Heurigen Dinner at a Viennese Vineyard

Enjoying a good glass of wine and locally sourced foods at a restaurant beside Vienna's wonderful vineyards is probably the best thing to do after a successful day at the VANDA conference. 

Our conference-dinner at the open garden  of Heurigen „Maly“ will include wines, beers and other alcoholic drinks and non-alcoholic beverages, a balanced buffet where you can choose between traditional viennese vegetarian and meat-based dishes accompanied by musical performances until 11pm for only 35€.

To get to the Heurigen-Dinner: Either hop on the historic VANDA TRAM leaving from Campus or join our hiking squad on a panoramic VANDArung (see below) up the hills. While you’ll be able to enjoy the nostalgic flair of the tram in good company of conference colleagues and sweet music, the trekking-tour will take you through Vienna’s vineyards, offering breathtaking views of the Danube and the City with occasional wine-tastings along the way. Participation is free.

To clear your mind and give your brain a break, we offer free yoga sessions on Thursday and Friday morning - in nice weather on the roof top of our VANDA Conference venue NIG. Both sessions are 1 hour long and are suitable for beginners as well as advanced learners. If you are interested, bring some loose-fitting clothes with you, even though we also have some as a precaution.

The trekking-tour will take you through Vienna's vineyards, offering a breathtaking view over the City of Vienna and the Danube with wine-tastings along the way. We are going to walk the Stadtwanderweg 1, and the end of the VANDArung will be the 'Heurigen Maly' where you can participate the conference 'Heurigen Dinner' (see above).  Bring solid shoes and some water with you. Participation for the trekking tour is free.

Rooftop Bar

Have a cold drink above Vienna's rooftops! VANDA's Rooftop Bar offers you a deckchair to relax between or after sessions – a space for interaction, the possibility to enjoy an unforgettable view, music, refreshments and even gin tonic ice pops.

'We need to see the world from as many perspectives as possible.' Every afternoon we are offering short movie screenings with ethnographic and documentary film highlights from the festival archives of ethnocineca (International Documentary Film Festival Vienna).


Football Match

During the conference a team of international researchers will have the unique opportunity to play against the Polar Bears United FC, probably the most famous anthropological football club of the northern hemisphere. The match will take place at 'Marswiese', the home ground of the Polar Bears. A shuttle service will pick you and bring you back.

No football boots? No problem! You can rent boots at the sport center for €3. The Polar Bears are a mixed-gender football club. Thus, we would be delighted if many female players would join the conference team! For applications and/or questions please send an email to

Guided Museum Tours

We offer guided tours through chosen Viennese museums. Take a break and visit the Weltmuseum, the Waffenkammer, the Naturhistorisches Museum and the Volkskundemuseum and the 'City on the Move' Nordwest-railwaystation with us. Depending on the museum, you either have to pay nothing or only the discounted entry fee. The meeting point for all museum tours is the Infopoint at the NIG.
