Social Program

For the VANDA conference to be extraordinary, its social activities must be too. Therefore we will offer an exciting and diverse program of social and cultural activities to make your time at the conference an unforgettable experience. Please see the details and descriptions below, there are 3 categories of activities: a) free of charge without registration, b) free of charge with registration (limited number of participants), and c) with registration and payment. FIELDWORK SLAM (CANCELLED)

There's more to fieldwork than what we publish in scientific papers. Following the concept of poetry slams, VANDA provides a stage and a microphone for everyone who wants to share experiences and stories from their work in the field. Vienna's finest storytellers will slam it out with our conference guests. Gain fame and glory by getting in the spotlight and sharing your funniest or most interesting stories. The audience will decide who will be the 'Fieldwork Slammer of the Year'. If you want to share your experiences and stories from your work in the field, please send an e-mail to vanda@univie.ac.at to reserve your place on stage!

HEURIGEN DINNER

Enjoying a good glass of wine and locally sourced foods at a restaurant beside Vienna's wonderful vineyards is probably the best thing to do after a successful day at the VANDA conference. Our conference dinner at the open garden  of Heurigen "Muth" will include a drink, as well a balanced buffet where you can choose between traditional viennese vegetarian and meat-based dishes until 11pm for only 35 Euros.

YOGA CLASS

To clear your mind and give your brain a break, we offer free yoga sessions every morning - in nice weather on the roof top of our VANDA Conference venue NIG. All sessions are 1 hour long and are suitable for beginners as well as advanced learners. If you are interested, bring some loose-fitting clothes with you, even though we also have some as a precaution.

DANCEHALL DANCE CLASS & INDIAN DANCE CLASS

DANCEHALL has its roots in Jamaica, coming directly from reggae. The name derived from the word "dancehall", meaning the place where people danced indoors or outdoors. Dancehall originated in Jamaica in the early 1980s and spread quickly throughout the West Indies until it reached the rest of the world. The dance engages the whole body, and the music sets our mind free. Let’s dance & have a vibe together!

GAMES: CARDS AGAINST ANTHROPOLOGY & SCAVENGER HUNT & PUB QUIZ (PUB QUIZ CANCELLED)

In between the interesting scientific program, we also offer some interesting games for some rest and to enjoy and get to know each other better. An easy way to talk about your ethic views in the field is the CARDS AGAINST ANTHROPOLOGY game which we can play in groups, which was invented by Matthew Durington and his students. You have ethical dilemmas and different options how to deal with the situation to choose from. Join our SCAVENGER HUNT through the inner city of Vienna. In groups you will search for different clues based on cultural and social anthropology topics. Follow the route, solve exiting riddles or tasks and discover different spots in Vienna with us! Adding to that, there will be a PUB QUIZ. Have some drinks and and put your general knowledge to the test. All those games were chosen and are organized to losen up the atmosphere, to get to know each other better and also to maybe get some new perspectives on scientific topics.

ART NIGHT & WINE

Would you like to relax and spend a quiet and pleasant evening with a creative group? Have nice conversations, paint and at the same time drink some wine and eat some snacks? - Then "Art Night & Wine" is the right place for you. It is a course where you can let your creativity and inspiration run free. We will paint a famous painting together in the group according to our interpretations and relax in good company.
